- HISTORY
- Assembly language is not a single language but a family: each processor architecture has its own, mapping short mnemonics like MOV or ADD directly to machine instructions. Kathleen Booth is credited with devising the first assembly language in 1947 for the ARC computer at Birkbeck College in London. In 1949 David Wheeler wrote the "initial orders" for the EDSAC at Cambridge, an early assembler that translated symbolic instructions into machine code as the program was loaded.
- USAGE
- Rarely used to write whole programs today, but still essential for boot code, device drivers, embedded systems, hand-optimised routines, compiler development and reverse engineering.
