- HISTORY
- AWK was created in 1977 at Bell Labs by Alfred Aho, Peter Weinberger and Brian Kernighan, and its name comes from their initials. They wanted a small language for quick pattern-matching and reporting jobs on text files, the kind of task that would be tedious to write in C. A program is a list of patterns and actions that run against each input line, with fields split automatically into $1, $2 and so on. The three authors published "The AWK Programming Language" in 1988 and a second edition in 2023.
- USAGE
- Installed on virtually every Unix-like system and still widely used for one-liners and short scripts that slice log files, CSV data and command output. Few people write large programs in it, but many use it every day from the shell.
