HISTORY
José Valim, then a member of the Ruby on Rails core team, started Elixir in 2011 as a research project at Plataformatec, a Brazilian consultancy. Frustrated by how hard it was to make Ruby use many cores, he built a new language on top of the Erlang virtual machine (BEAM), inheriting its lightweight processes and fault tolerance. Elixir added a Ruby-flavoured syntax, hygienic macros, protocols and tooling such as the Mix build tool. Version 1.0 was released in 2014.
USAGE
Elixir has a small but dedicated community, mostly building web backends and real-time systems with the Phoenix framework. Companies such as Discord use it for highly concurrent services, and the Nx project brings it into numerical computing.
