HISTORY
Erlang was created in 1986 at the Ericsson Computer Science Laboratory in Stockholm by Joe Armstrong, Robert Virding and Mike Williams, to program telephone switches that must never go down. Its first implementation was an interpreter written in Prolog. The language is built around lightweight isolated processes, message passing and a "let it crash" approach to fault tolerance with supervisors. The name honours the Danish mathematician Agner Krarup Erlang, and conveniently also reads as "Ericsson Language". Ericsson released it as open source in 1998.
USAGE
Erlang is a niche but battle-tested language for highly available, concurrent systems: telecom, messaging (WhatsApp famously ran on it) and infrastructure like RabbitMQ. Its virtual machine, BEAM, also hosts Elixir and Gleam.
