HISTORY
Jeff Kodosky, a co-founder of National Instruments in Austin, Texas, started LabVIEW in 1983 to let scientists and engineers control lab instruments without writing traditional code. The first version shipped in 1986 for the Apple Macintosh, whose graphical interface made the idea possible. Programs are drawn rather than typed: functions are boxes, data flows along wires, and each program is a "virtual instrument" with a front panel of knobs and graphs. The underlying graphical dataflow language is called G.
USAGE
A niche but well established tool in test and measurement, data acquisition, lab automation and industrial control, and common in engineering schools. It is a commercial product, now owned by Emerson after its acquisition of National Instruments.
