- HISTORY
- Cleve Moler, a numerical analyst at the University of New Mexico, wrote the first MATLAB ("MATrix LABoratory") in the late 1970s in Fortran. He wanted his students to use the LINPACK and EISPACK linear algebra libraries without having to write Fortran themselves. The interactive calculator spread from campus to campus, and in 1984 Moler, Jack Little and Steve Bangert founded MathWorks to sell a rewritten, commercial version in C.
- USAGE
- Widely used in engineering, science and academia, especially for signal processing, control systems and simulation together with its companion tool Simulink. It is commercial software, and open alternatives such as Python and Julia have taken part of its ground.
