- HISTORY
- Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman started R at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, in the early 1990s as a free implementation of S, a statistics language created at Bell Labs. They first used it for teaching statistics, and it was released under the GNU GPL in 1995, with version 1.0 following in 2000. The name is a double joke: it is the first letter of both creators' names, and the letter before S.
- USAGE
- One of the main languages for statistics and data analysis, especially in academia, bioinformatics, epidemiology and the social sciences. Its package repository CRAN hosts over 20,000 packages, and the tidyverse and ggplot2 are widely loved.
