HISTORY
SAS, originally the Statistical Analysis System, began in 1966 at North Carolina State University as a project to analyse agricultural research data for a consortium of universities, with funding from the US National Institutes of Health. Anthony James Barr designed much of the language, with James Goodnight writing many of its statistical procedures and John Sall and Jane Helwig joining later. In 1976 the four founded SAS Institute to develop the software commercially, and it grew into one of the largest privately held software companies in the world.
USAGE
A proprietary language used for statistics and data processing in large organisations, most notably in the pharmaceutical industry for clinical trial analysis, and in banking, insurance and government. It remains entrenched in regulated industries, but is steadily losing ground to R and Python.
