HISTORY
William Gould and Sean Becketti released Stata in 1985 through the Computing Resource Center in California, as a statistics package for the then new IBM PC. Analyses are written as commands in "do-files", with "ado-files" letting users add their own commands, and macros provide text substitution. A separate, compiled matrix language called Mata was added in 2005.
USAGE
Widely used in economics, epidemiology, political science and public health research, and a standard tool in many economics PhD programmes. Like SAS and R, it is mostly written by researchers rather than software engineers.
