HISTORY
Stephen Wolfram created the language as the core of Mathematica, released by his company Wolfram Research in 1988. It built on his earlier SMP computer algebra system, and was designed around symbolic expressions and pattern-based rewriting, so the same notation handles algebra, numerics, graphics and programs. The language was officially named the Wolfram Language in 2013, and it also powers the Wolfram|Alpha answer engine.
USAGE
A proprietary language used mainly through Mathematica by scientists, engineers, mathematicians and students, in research, education and technical computing. Outside academia and some technical industries it is relatively niche.
