HISTORY
ABAP was created at the German software company SAP in 1983 as a report-generation language for its R/2 mainframe business software. The name originally stood for "Allgemeiner Berichts-Aufbereitungs-Prozessor", German for "generic report preparation processor", and was later reinterpreted as "Advanced Business Application Programming". It grew into the language in which most of SAP's own applications are written, and later gained object-oriented extensions known as ABAP Objects. Its programs live inside the SAP system's database rather than in files on disk.
USAGE
Used almost exclusively inside the SAP ecosystem, where a large community of consultants and developers customise and extend SAP ERP and S/4HANA systems for big enterprises. Outside SAP it is essentially unknown, but inside it remains in heavy daily use.
