HISTORY
In the 1970s the US Department of Defense was using hundreds of different programming languages across its projects and launched a competition for a single, safe language for embedded and mission-critical systems. The winning "Green" proposal came from a team led by Jean Ichbiah at CII Honeywell Bull in France. The language was named after Ada Lovelace, often called the first programmer, and its military standard number, MIL- STD-1815, is the year of her birth. The first standard, Ada 83, was published in 1983.
USAGE
A niche but important language for safety-critical software in avionics, railways, defence, space and air traffic control. Its SPARK subset is used where code must be formally proven correct.
