- HISTORY
- COBOL, the "Common Business-Oriented Language", was designed in 1959 by a committee of the CODASYL consortium, brought together with backing from the US Department of Defense to create a portable language for business data processing. It drew heavily on Grace Hopper's FLOW-MATIC and IBM's COMTRAN, and its English-like syntax was meant to be readable by managers as well as programmers. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, several US states made public appeals for COBOL programmers to keep their unemployment benefit systems running.
- USAGE
- A legacy language that still runs a large share of the world's banking, insurance and government transaction processing on mainframes. Few new projects start in it, and experienced COBOL developers are increasingly in demand as they retire.
