HISTORY
Rich Hickey spent about two and a half years working on Clojure largely on his own, without outside funding, before releasing it in 2007. He wanted a modern Lisp that ran on the Java Virtual Machine, could use any Java library, and made concurrent programming safer. Its answer was immutable, persistent data structures by default, with managed references such as atoms for the rare state that must change. In 2020 the Brazilian bank Nubank, one of its largest users, acquired Cognitect, the company that stewards Clojure.
USAGE
A niche language with a loyal following, used mainly for backend services and data processing, especially in fintech. ClojureScript brings it to the browser.
