- HISTORY
- Fortran, short for "Formula Translation", was developed by a team at IBM led by John Backus and delivered for the IBM 704 in 1957. Backus proposed it because writing programs in assembly language was slow and expensive. Many doubted a compiler could produce code as fast as hand-written assembly, so the team invested heavily in optimisation, and the result was the first widely used high-level language. Fortran has been revised many times since, gaining free-form source, modules, array operations and parallel features.
- USAGE
- Fortran is a legacy language that is still very much in production in high-performance computing: weather and climate models, physics, chemistry and engineering simulations. Many numerical libraries such as BLAS and LAPACK have Fortran roots.
