HISTORY
GDScript is the scripting language of the Godot game engine, created by Juan Linietsky and Ariel Manzur and open sourced in 2014. After trying to embed Lua and Python, the Godot developers designed their own language, tightly integrated with the engine's nodes, signals and editor. Its syntax is close to Python's, with indentation-based blocks. GDScript 2.0, released with Godot 4 in 2023, added optional static types, lambdas and first-class signals.
USAGE
Used by the fast-growing Godot community, mostly indie and hobbyist game developers, to script gameplay. Godot's popularity jumped in 2023 when many developers left Unity over its pricing changes.
