HISTORY
Go was designed at Google in 2007 by Robert Griesemer, Rob Pike and Ken Thompson, who were frustrated with slow builds and the complexity of the C++ used for Google's servers. Legend has it the idea took shape while waiting for a large C++ program to compile. They aimed for a small language with fast compilation, garbage collection and built-in concurrency through goroutines and channels. Go was announced as open source in November 2009 and reached version 1.0 in 2012. Its gopher mascot was drawn by Renée French.
USAGE
Go is a popular language for cloud infrastructure and backend services: Docker, Kubernetes and Terraform are all written in it. It is widely used for networked services, command-line tools and DevOps tooling.
