- HISTORY
- Niklaus Wirth designed Pascal at ETH Zurich and published it in 1970, after the ALGOL committee rejected his simpler proposal in favour of what became ALGOL 68. He wanted a small, clean language to teach structured programming, with strong static types and nothing that hid what the machine was doing. UCSD Pascal brought it to microcomputers through a portable p-code virtual machine, and Borland's Turbo Pascal, written by Anders Hejlsberg in 1983, made it hugely popular on PCs thanks to its speed and low price.
- USAGE
- Pascal was the main teaching language of the 1980s and early 1990s, and early Apple Macintosh software was written in it. Today it survives through Free Pascal, the Lazarus IDE and its object-oriented descendant Delphi, and still appears in some schools.
