HISTORY
Larry Wall, a linguist turned programmer, released Perl in December 1987 while working at Unisys. He wanted a Unix scripting language that made text and report processing easier than juggling sed, awk and shell scripts. He first called it "Pearl", but dropped the "a" on discovering an existing language named PEARL. Perl's motto, "There's more than one way to do it", reflects Wall's view of programming languages as something closer to natural languages.
USAGE
Past its peak, when it was the glue of the early web and CGI scripting. Perl 5 is still maintained and used for system administration, text processing, bioinformatics and in many long-lived legacy codebases.
