- HISTORY
- Rasmus Lerdorf wrote a set of C programs in 1994 to track visits to his online résumé, and released them in 1995 as "Personal Home Page Tools". He never meant to create a programming language, and the tools grew features one at a time as users asked for them. In 1997 Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans rewrote the parser, which became PHP 3, and the name was turned into the recursive acronym "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor". Their later rewrite, the Zend Engine, still powers PHP today.
- USAGE
- One of the most widely deployed server-side languages: it runs a large share of all websites, including WordPress, Drupal and much of the web hosting world. Modern PHP, with frameworks such as Laravel and Symfony, remains a mainstream choice for web development.
