HISTORY
PL/I was designed from 1963 by IBM together with SHARE, its scientific user group, as the one language for the new System/360 mainframes. It set out to serve scientists, who used Fortran, and business programmers, who used COBOL, in a single language with ideas from ALGOL as well. It was first called NPL, for New Programming Language, but the name clashed with Britain's National Physical Laboratory, so it became PL/I. The Multics operating system was largely written in PL/I.
USAGE
A legacy language. PL/I still runs in mainframe applications at banks, insurers and government agencies, and IBM continues to ship a compiler for z/OS, but almost no new projects choose it.
