HISTORY
Prolog was created in 1972 by Alain Colmerauer and Philippe Roussel in Marseille, France, building on Robert Kowalski's work in Edinburgh on reading logic as a program. The group was working on processing natural language, French in particular, and wanted a language where you state facts and rules and let the computer search for answers. The name comes from the French "programmation en logique". In the 1980s Prolog was picked as the core of Japan's ambitious Fifth Generation Computer Systems project.
USAGE
A niche language, used in academia, AI and logic research, teaching, and some expert systems and rule engines. SWI-Prolog is the most popular implementation today.
