HISTORY
Miller Puckette created Pure Data in the mid-1990s at the University of California, San Diego. Years earlier, at IRCAM in Paris, he had written Max, a visual language for interactive computer music that later became a commercial product. Pure Data reworked the same ideas as free, open-source software: programs are "patches" in which boxes are connected with virtual cables, and audio and control messages flow between them in real time.
USAGE
A niche but long-lived tool in computer music, sound design, interactive installations and media art, much used in universities and by artists. Its engine can also be embedded in apps and games through the libpd library.
