HISTORY
Larry Wall announced Perl 6 in 2000 as a redesign of Perl that would break backwards compatibility to fix long-standing warts, with the community submitting hundreds of proposals for the new language. The design took a famously long time: the first stable version was released on Christmas Day 2015. By then it had become a very different language from Perl 5, with gradual typing, grammars and lazy lists, and in 2019 it was renamed Raku so the two could go their own ways.
USAGE
A niche language with a small, enthusiastic community. It is used mostly for scripting, text processing and parsing, where its built-in grammars shine.
