HISTORY
RPG, short for Report Program Generator, was created by IBM in 1959 for the IBM 1401. It was designed to make it easy for punched card shops to move from electromechanical tabulating machines to computers: programmers filled in fixed-column specification forms describing input files, calculations and printed reports. The language evolved through RPG II, RPG III and RPG IV, and modern versions accept fully free-form code instead of the original column-based layout.
USAGE
A legacy but still active language, used almost exclusively on IBM i (the successor of the AS/400) to run business applications in banking, insurance, distribution and manufacturing. Its community is small and ageing, but many companies still maintain large RPG codebases.
