HISTORY
Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto conceived Ruby in Japan in 1993 and published the first public release in 1995. He wanted a scripting language that was more powerful than Perl and more object-oriented than Python, designed above all to make programmers happy. The name was picked over the alternative "Coral" during an online chat with a colleague, partly as a nod to Perl. Ruby stayed mostly a Japanese phenomenon until Ruby on Rails appeared in 2004 and made it famous worldwide.
USAGE
A mature, well-established language mostly used for web development with Ruby on Rails, which powers sites such as GitHub and Shopify. It is also common for scripting and developer tooling, such as Homebrew and Fastlane, though its popularity has declined from its peak in the early 2010s.
