HISTORY
Scratch was created by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, led by Mitchel Resnick, and released publicly in 2007. It grew out of work with after-school Computer Clubhouses, aiming to let children create interactive stories, games and animations by snapping together graphical blocks instead of typing code. The name comes from the way hip-hop DJs scratch and remix records, reflecting the idea of sharing and remixing projects. The first version was written in Squeak Smalltalk; Scratch 3.0, released in 2019, runs in the browser.
USAGE
One of the most widely used introductory programming environments in the world, used by children, schools and teachers to learn programming concepts. Its online community hosts many millions of shared projects, but it is an educational tool rather than a language for production software.
