- AUTHORS
- Ole-Johan Dahl, Kristen Nygaard
- HISTORY
- Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard developed Simula at the Norwegian Computing Center in Oslo, starting in 1962. They needed a language to describe and run discrete event simulations, and built it as an extension of ALGOL 60. Simula 67 introduced classes, objects, inheritance and virtual procedures, making it the first object-oriented language. Dahl and Nygaard received the Turing Award in 2001 for these ideas, which directly inspired Smalltalk and C++.
- USAGE
- A historic language with essentially no active use today. It is remembered as the ancestor of object-oriented programming, and Bjarne Stroustrup's experience with it led directly to the design of C++.
