- HISTORY
- Visual Basic for Applications first shipped in 1993 inside Excel 5.0, replacing the cryptic macro languages of each Office program with a single dialect of Visual Basic. It runs inside its host application and drives it through COM objects such as workbooks, sheets and ranges. Variables can be declared with a type, or left as a Variant that accepts anything, and the language freely converts between strings and numbers.
- USAGE
- Possibly the most widely written language among people who are not professional programmers: finance, accounting and operations teams still run on Excel macros. Microsoft keeps it supported but steers new automation to Office Scripts and Python in Excel.
